The NBA's Pacific Division

Glenaldo Gregorio Pena of Pleasant Hill, California, has served as district advisor in the Contra Costa County Office of Education from 2011 to 2015. In this role, Glenaldo Gregorio Pena has made significant contributions to the department’s technological approach. Away from work, Glenaldo G. Pena, known to friends and family as Glenn, enjoys staying active by playing basketball and hiking.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) consists of the Eastern Conference and Western Conference, which are further subdivided into three divisions of five teams each, for a total of 30 teams. The Western Conference’s Pacific Division is unique in that four of the five teams play in the state of California: the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, and the Golden State Warriors of Oakland.

The Pacific Division was formed prior to the 1970-1971 season, though only the Lakers and San Francisco Warriors were part of the inaugural class, along with the San Diego Rockets and out-of-state competition, the Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle SuperSonics. Over the last five decades, the division has often been one of the league’s strongest, with the entire division finishing over .500 in 1978 and six of its teams taking eight conference playoff spots in 1992. More recently, the division has produced the last three Western Conference champions.

California teams have done especially well. The Lakers, one of the most successful franchises in league history, have claimed a record 23 Pacific Division titles, while the reigning champion Warriors have five to their name and three in a row. Los Angeles has gone on to win the NBA Finals on 11 occasions, while Golden State has secured two of the last three league championships.

UCLA's Alumni Mentor Program

Glenaldo (Glenn) Gregorio Pena is a successful accounting professional with years of experience in accounting operations, office administration, and information systems management. He has served as district advisor for Contra Costa County Office of Education. A graduate of UCLA, Glenaldo G. Pena belongs to the UCLA Alumni Association.

UCLA alums go on to do great things in their chosen careers and many choose to put their experience and skills to use as members of the UCLA Alumni Mentor Program, which was established by the UCLA Alumni Association. Through this program, Bruins are able to offer their knowledge and experience to current UCLA students, helping them prepare for their futures while also giving back to UCLA by having a positive impact on the college community. Alums do not need to live in Los Angeles to be a part of the program. Many live out of state or abroad and still are able to provide assistance through UCLA ONE (Opportunity, Network, and Experience), an online network to connect current Bruins with alumni. Through this system, alumni offer professional networking, mentorship, peer-driven career advice, and job leads.

Basic Hiking Safety

The director of fiscal services at Acalanes Union High School District, Glenaldo "Glenn" Gregorio Pena has been working in the finance industry for more than two decades. Glenn G. Pena graduated from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and has worked for such companies as AllSmile Dental Practice and the Contra Costa County Office of Education. In his free time, Glenaldo Gregorio Pena enjoys hiking.

Hiking is a popular way to exercise and enjoy nature, but the activity can be dangerous if hikers do not take proper precautions. As a hiker prepares for a trip, he or she should always find at least one other person to go along. Hiking in pairs allows one hiker to get help if the other is injured.

If hiking with a partner is not possible, a hiker must be sure to know where he or she is going. Stay on familiar, clearly marked trails to avoid getting lost. A hiker who walks alone should take a compass, a map, a GPS unit, and a phone, if possible.

Hiking safety is also affected by a hiker’s clothes and provisions. Prior to a trip, hikers should check the weather forecast. Knowing the forecast makes it easier for hikers to dress according to the weather conditions. Hikers should wear a sturdy but comfortable pair of hiking shoes or boots that help prevent blisters and sprains.

A basic first-aid kit and a lighter or matches can be helpful to hikers. Even for a day hike, these items can be invaluable if a hiker gets lost or injured. Food and water are also necessary provisions for hikers.
